Weather Eye: Sun was sleepin’ on the job, but we really needed rain

“Raindrops keep fallin’ on my head, but that doesn’t mean my eyes will soon be turning red, crying’s not for me, ’cause I’m never gonna stop the rain by complaining, because I’m free, nothing’s worrying me.”

With those huge raindrops Saturday afternoon, it reminded me of the song “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” and I began singing the lyrics above. I doubt anyone was complaining, because we really needed the rain. In Thursday’s column I mentioned the next incoming bout of rain would likely hold off until after dark Friday. Well, it arrived a few hours earlier.

Between 5 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday, Vancouver’s official rain gauge had nearly an inch of rain but I saw many locations throughout the county with well over an inch. There were some dark, ominous clouds ready to produce a frog strangler. Maybe you had one at your location.

I’m glad I only watered some flower pots, as the rest of our yards got enough for the lawn, garden and even some large shrubs. And guess what? More showers are likely today, and even a thunderstorm.

Getting back to those rain drops Saturday. Wow, they were the size of quarters and larger. Water was flowing down the streets and roadways curb to curb and overflowing gutters and downspouts. Haven’t see that for a while.

So with more scattered showers in the forecast this week, no need to cry your eyes red, as the song suggests, as we will have some days with plenty of sunbreaks as well. More rainbows? We sure saw plenty Friday evening after those showers just before sunset. I looked at some beautiful pictures taken here in Clark County of the rainbows on social media and, in some cases, double rainbows.

Oh, I forgot, is this April or June? Yes, it is June for sure, but spring lingers well into June sometimes. After all, summer officially begins on Saturday afternoon, June 20. We’ll excuse this more typical early springlike weather with heavy showers, thunderstorms and rainbows until then.

Enjoy your week as we dance between the raindrops and pause with the sunbeams. See you Tuesday.
