Clark Public Utilities: Watch for scams

Clark Public Utilities is warning its customers of scam calls from people claiming to work for the utility, asking for payment and threatening disconnection.

The scam calls are being reported by both residential and business customers, the utility said on its website.

“These calls can be very convincing and might even appear to be from our utility phone number on caller ID. But they are fake and illegal,” the utility said.

Often the scam callers will instruct customers to purchase a prepaid gift card — sometimes specifically a “green dot” card — and ask for a call back to pay using that card. The utility would not ask customers to make payments in such a way.

Other scammers have recorded messages that sound similar to the utility’s welcome message, another fraudulent effort to make these calls sound convincing.

Additionally, scammers are using emails disguised as coming from Clark Public Utilities MyAccount to solicit personal information.

Do not make a payment if you receive this kind of call or email. Hang up and call the utility at 360-992-3000 to check the status of your account.
