The Evergreen Public Schools Board of Directors on Tuesday passed a resolution pledging to be anti-racist.
The two-page, nonbinding resolution acknowledges the systemic racism that has harmed communities of color throughout the history of the United States. The resolution goes on to pledge that the district will create an equity plan in time for the 2020-2021 school year that will address those issues in school policies and practices.
The district this summer will conduct an equity audit, and recently announced the hiring of Klarissa Hightower as its new executive director of equity and inclusion.
“I am glad we have the resolution now in place, but now we must turn the resolution’s words into action,” board President Julie Bocanegra said.
