A 20-year-old Vancouver man appeared Tuesday in Clark County Superior Court after he allegedly tried to break into a home, accosted an Amazon delivery driver and “bodychecked” a child.

Judge David Gregerson set bail at $50,000 in the case against Devan R.D. Graham, who’s accused of residential burglary and third-degree assault on a child. Graham is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 7.

On Monday, Graham entered the side yard of a home in Vancouver’s Father Blanchet Park neighborhood and tried to pry open a locked sliding glass door, according to a probable cause affidavit. He woke up the resident, who witnessed his attempted break-in. The resident ran into another room and called 911, according to the affidavit.

Graham then left the home and was seen harassing an Amazon delivery driver by kicking the driver’s side door of their van. He then entered the vehicle on its passenger’s side and demanded to be driven to an unknown location. The driver refused, and Graham ran away, court records say.

Police say they believe Graham ran to the nearby St. Joseph Catholic Church, specifically its school, at 6500 Highland Drive.

“He ran across the campus and to the covered playground and bodychecked (a 10-year-old child),” the affidavit says.

A teacher intervened and Graham fled the school, but officers caught up with him a short time later, according to the affidavit. Once he was in custody, Graham refused to talk about his alleged behavior.

Clark County Jail booking paperwork notes that Graham may have consumed an unknown amount of alcohol prior to his arrest. The document says he was not showing signs of observable mental health problems, and jail officers were not aware of a history of mental illness.

In January 2018, when Graham was 18 years old, he was the victim of a shooting in the Ellsworth Springs neighborhood, an event police described as a drug deal gone wrong. Court records said Graham suffered gunshot wounds to his head, arm, leg and buttocks.

When a suspect was charged with attempted murder in March, a victim impact statement indicated Graham was no longer hospitalized.
