Washougal’s girls basketball team prides itself on its defense and that rang true Thursday night in a 64-42 home victory over Woodland to remain unbeaten in 2A Greater St. Helens League play.

Savea Mansfield had a career night, scoring 16 of her game-high 22 points in the first quarter when the Panthers led 25-3 after eight minutes.

“We hang our hats on our defense,” Panthers coach Britney Ervin said, “and that’s what we did tonight.

Of Woodland’s 42 points, 24 came by free throws. Three of its six field goals came off 3-pointers.

Defense also aided in Mansfield’s offense, Ervin said. The guard also five rebounds.

“She was running the floor really well, looking for her shot and she worked her butt off on defense. “It’s great for her to have a game like that.”

McKinley Stotts added 13 and Samantha Mederos had 10.

Payten Foster led the Beavers with 15 points and Kaily Christiensen added 11.
