The Community Military Appreciation Committee, which recognizes and honors members of the armed forces and their families, is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

The group came together in 2010 to organize a Memorial Day event after the Army Reserve’s 104th Division transferred from Vancouver to Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Since then, it has grown to encompass multiple missions, including regular ceremonies to honor local soldiers killed in action overseas and establishing a scholarship fund for their children — $73,000 and counting.

The group was also instrumental in securing area memorials, like a POW/MIA monument in east Vancouver erected in 2014.

“CMAC has established itself as a vital partner,” Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle said in a proclamation recognizing the 10-year landmark during a Jan. 6 city council meeting.
