OLYMPIA — A shipment of dairy cattle was handled by the Port of Olympia last week, the port announced.

The 1,650 cows were loaded onto the Girolando Express, which was expected to arrive at the marine terminal on Thursday, then depart for Vietnam over the weekend.

Dairy cattle has been the port’s most consistent cargo after logs in recent years.

The port also shipped cattle to Vietnam in September 2018, made two shipments in 2017, and its first shipment in 2015, according to Olympian archives.

Vietnam is importing cows as part of a goal to reduce childhood malnourishment by providing one glass of milk per child per day, according to the port.
