In the Community: Space remains for Vancouver Lake Half Marathon

There’s still time and space for runners to signup for the Vancouver Lake Half Marathon, which is set for 10 a.m. on Feb. 23 at Vancouver Lake Regional Park.

There is also a half marathon walk that begins at 9:30 a.m., and a 4-mile run/walk at 10:20 a.m.

Pre-registration is $35 for the half marathon and $25 for the 4-mile run.

Kids can try hockey for free

Mountain View Ice Arena in Vancouver is one of the host locations for USA Hockey’s Try Hockey For Free Day on Saturday (Feb. 22).

Boys and girls ages 4-9 can come out and experience youth hockey at no charge with Mountain View Ice Arena’s coaches assisting in learning the basics. No previous skating or hockey experience is required, and equipment will be available to borrow.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. at the arena, located at 14313 S.E. Mill Plain Blvd.

Senior softball league taking registrations

The Vancouver Metro Senior Softball Association (VMSSA) is accepting applications for the upcoming summer season.

The 60-and-older league is May through August.

This is a recreational league for men and women designed so that each team can be competitive and still have fun.

All of the games are played at Pacific Park, N.E. 172nd Ave and N.E. 18th Street. Games are played each week night with a doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m.

Fee is $60, and deadline to register is March 16.

High school tennis gear event set for March 8

The Vancouver Tennis Center Foundation is hosting a free tennis gear giveaway from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 8 at VTC, 5300 E. 18th Street in Vancouver, next to Fort Vancouver High School.

The event is open to all girls participating in tennis for Clark County schools and their coaches.

The event offers gently used or new gear, and VTC is always accepting tennis gear donations for the event.

Players can also bring in their racquet and get a new grip or get racquet sizing by one of the pros at VTC and event do a racquet trade in.

Evergreen Tennis holding tournament fundraiser

Evergreen Tennis in Camas will be holding a Spring Blast Tournament on April 25 as a benefit for the Evergreen Foundation scholarships.

The draw size is limited, so early registration is recommended.

Fees are $30 and all proceeds go toward the Foundation Scholarship Fund.

The Evergreen Tennis winter raffle and Junior Blast tournament raised $2,000 for future scholarships.

Portland State tennis home at VTC

Big Sky Conference tennis returns to the Vancouver Tennis Center this season as home to the Portland State men’s and women’s teams.

Admission is free.
