Heavy rains, debris scuttles Sunday Christmas Ships parade

Heavy rain from an atmospheric river event forced Christmas Ships organizers to scuttle plans for a Sunday night parade, the group announced Sunday evening.

“Unfortunately the parade for this evening has been canceled,” the organization said in its announcement. “As our boats started leaving the marina they ran in to heavy debris fields (logs, trees, garbage) from the recent heavy rains. We apologize for the inconvenience, but the safety of our participants is our primary concern.”

The cancellation comes as the National Weather Service reported 1.64 inches of rain fell at Vancouver’s Pearson Field in the previous 24 hours ending at 4 p.m. Rain is forecast to continue through Monday, with some clearing starting Tuesday.
