A 40-year-old homeless man was seriously injured late Tuesday night when he was struck by a car in the St. Johns area north of Vancouver, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
Emergency crews were dispatched at 11:46 p.m. to the 10100 block of Northeast 50th Avenue after Eliza B. Martorano, 19, called 911 to report that she’d struck someone, according to a sheriff’s office press statement.
Investigators were told that Robert J. Gonzales, 40, had been walking in the northbound lane of Northeast 50th Avenue when he was struck by Martorano’s Kia hatchback. He suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital, according to the statement.
“Gonzales was not wearing reflective clothing, nor was he in a crosswalk,” the statement said. “There are no streetlights on this section of roadway and the posted speed limit is 40 mph. Northeast 50th Avenue also has a paved sidewalk on the east side of the roadway.”
Martorano did not show any signs of intoxication and was not issued any citations at the scene, according to the statement. It said the crash remains under investigation by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office traffic unit.
