Weather Eye: Plenty of rain as hazy shade of winter settles in

Looking at Monday afternoon’s satellite picture, I saw a massive storm encompassing the Gulf of Alaska. A nicely wound-up storm that, fortunately for us, was moving toward southeastern Alaska.

We get rain today and breezy conditions more like a lamb rather than a lion. More rain later Wednesday and Thursday, and rain Friday through the weekend. The weekend weather looks wet and snow levels will be above Timberline on Mount Hood.

Although I see plenty of rain, and most days will be wet rather than dry through the middle of next week, I don’t see any odds of a white Christmas in the lowlands. Drier weather may play out late next week and Christmas Day could be partly sunny and temperatures in the lower 40s. That’s my ‘out on a limb’ forecast at the moment.

Of course, I have fallen off that branch many times over the years, but I was asked by some folks what Christmas weather looks like. As I suggested here the other day, I believe we see a better opportunity for some colder weather and chances of snow around New Years. Meanwhile, we stay here in the present.

Locally, Monday was befitting for a winter day, overcast and gray. The rest of the week will be one of those black and white regimes with little color in the skies. Highs coming up will be seasonal, in the upper 40s for the most part, and mild overnight with all the clouds, in the upper 30s to lower 40s.

In just days our sunsets will cease to be so early and slowly we head the other way.
