Clark County recorded six new COVID-19 deaths and 129 new cases on Thursday as the number of active, potentially contagious, cases rose above 1,000 for the first time.

The six fatalities were a man age 80 or older with underlying conditions; a man in his 60s with no underling conditions; two women age 80 or older with no underlying conditions; a woman in her 70s with no underlying conditions; and a person in their 60s with no underlying conditions, according to Clark County Public Health.

The additional deaths bring the county’s number of confirmed and suspect deaths due to COVID-19 to 121, according to Public Health data. Three new deaths were reported on Tuesday, putting the total deaths from COVID-19 this week at nine.

The number of active cases rose from 928 on Wednesday to 1,035 on Thursday, according to Public Health, which disclosed that it had previously been underreporting active cases, a statistic that counts people infected with COVID-19 still in their isolation period.

“Several weeks ago, when our case numbers began dramatically increasing, our ability to reach all cases was impacted,” Public Health said in a statement on social media. “If we were not reaching cases or they were declining active monitoring, they were not being included in our active case total. We have corrected this and are now including all confirmed cases who are in their isolation period (potentially contagious) in our active case total.”

The 129 new cases bring the county’s total number of COVID-19 cases to 10,357 to date. The county’s total surpassed 10,000 on Wednesday, with an average of about 165 new cases per day over the past seven days.

There are 53 people hospitalized with COVID-19, up from Wednesday, and seven people hospitalized awaiting test results, according to Public Health.
