Concerned Ridgefield parents plan to hold a “Ridgefield Rally to Open Schools” outside the school district’s headquarters today.
The rally is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the district office, 510 Pioneer St., in an effort to “communicate to the Ridgefield School District that we want our students to have the choice to be back in school, in person,” according to a press release.
The group plans for a socially distanced event along Main Avenue, and encourages parents and students of all ages to attend.
The group points to recent words spoken by Chris Reykdal, the state’s superintendent of public instruction. He said last week during a House Education Committee meeting in Olympia that distance learning is not working for many students.
“We are concerned that students are not being heard,” the group’s press release read in part. “Their voices are lost and while administrators from school districts to unions to health districts all seem to want to point fingers in other directions, nobody is asking students what they need, and listening to their voices. The intention is to bring together community members that believe students need an option for in-person learning.”
While many of Clark County’s school districts have welcomed kindergartners into a hybrid learning setting, Ridgefield has not. The district announced Nov. 18 it is delaying bringing kindergartners into buildings until at least Jan. 5 because of rising COVID-19 numbers in the county.
Attempts to reach the district for comment Monday were unsuccessful.
