A passerby rammed the door of a burning barn, freeing animals trapped inside, Monday morning in Clark County’s Duluth area.
Clark County Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched at 6:56 a.m. to 2015 N.E. 209 St., for a report of a barn on fire.
An engine from the Dollars Corner fire station responded and arrived at the address within six minutes. The crew found a two-story barn or shop in flames, according to a news release from the fire agency.
Firefighters started dousing the flames from the exterior of the barn due to the intensity, the fire agency said. Water tenders drove to the scene from more than a quarter-mile away due to a lack of fire hydrants in the area.
Farm animals were kept on the ground floor of the barn, but the passerby rammed the door allowing some of them to escape. According to the fire agency, several prized miniature stallions were freed and placed into a corral by the Samaritan. Two goats in pens inside the barn died.
Clark County Fire & Rescue is attempting to contact the Samaritan to thank them for their actions.
The barn also had living quarters on the second floor. People had stayed there over the weekend but left Sunday.
Five fire engines, one ladder truck, three water tenders and three chief officers — 21 firefighters in total — responded to the barn. Clark County fire districts 3 and 6, and the Vancouver Fire Department provided assistance.
The Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.
