Vancouver air-duct cleaners, owner ordered to pay $10 million in civil penalties

The state Attorney General’s Office announced Wednesday that two Vancouver air-duct cleaning companies, owned by the same man, have been ordered to pay $10 million in civil penalties for engaging in deceptive advertising and unfair sales practices.

The companies, US Air Ducts & Sky Builders Inc. and DLM Services, made over 13 million robocalls within the state from 2017 to 2019, including calling more than 500 individual Washington residents over 100 times.

Evergreen district to cut 475 classified positions due to budget cuts

Evergreen Public Schools will furlough 475 classified staff due to anticipated hits to the district’s budget and the district’s decision to open remotely for the fall.

The furloughs will affect paraeducators, professional technicians, maintenance workers, transportation workers and other nonteaching staff. School will start remotely Sept. 1 due to continued concerns about the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Truck full of teens crashes into tree in rural Clark County

A truckload of teenagers crashed into a tree Wednesday off of a gravel road north of Washougal, ejecting some of them from the truck bed, according to a Clark County sheriff’s sergeant.

Traffic unit deputies were dispatched for a crash at 4:22 p.m. to the area of L1680 and L1500 roads, about 2 miles east of the Jones Creek ORV trailhead. Dispatch logs show firefighters and at least two ambulances also responded to the scene.

Clark County rolls out emergency rent assistance program

A $5.5 million assistance program intended to help Clark County residents struggling to pay rent during the COVID-19 pandemic officially launched Monday.

The Emergency Rent Assistance Program will serve an estimated 2,500 to 3,500 low-income households. Eligible households can receive one-time assistance that covers up to three months of past, present or future rent.

Vancouver man faces murder charge in 3-month-old daughter’s death

A Vancouver man accused of causing multiple brain injuries to his 3-month-old daughter is now facing murder and manslaughter charges after the baby died of her injuries.

Elijah I. Partida, 22, entered not-guilty pleas to second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter, both domestic violence-related, Wednesday in Clark County Superior Court. Trial is set for Oct. 19, court records show.
