Weather Eye: Right now, there’s no end in sight for warm summer weather

Our fine summerlike weather continues until further notice with afternoon temperatures in the 80- to 85-degree range. No rain in sight, although a weak weather system slides by to our north Sunday night and early Monday. I think nothing but clouds at this point.

Vancouver’s rainfall for August still stands at .32 of an inch, about a quarter-inch below average. August will go down as a warm and dry month for sure.

I mentioned the other day the annual onslaught of almanacs are hitting the magazine racks and as usual, it is fun to see what they think our winter weather will be but remember, overall they have a 25 percent or less accuracy rate. That means almost anyone could make a prediction and nail it one time out of four.

Still, I enjoy reading them and comparing them to the woolly bears and readers’ comments as well. A quick look at the Farmers’ Almanac shows the Pacific Northwest will have a mild and dry winter. Mild is OK for us lowlanders but we need the annual snowfall to keep our waters flowing the rest of the year. So dry isn’t good either.

We’ll look further as the weeks go on and see if we can get an overall consensus of the most popular almanacs. Let’s enjoy the remaining days of summer while we can, plenty of time to discuss the dark months of winter.

As I write this column Wednesday afternoon, I was watching satellite pictures of Hurricane Laura, which was quickly approaching landfall as a strong Category 4 hurricane. The highest rating is a Category 5 and this storm was just 7 mph under the Category 5 rating. Prayers for those folks in the path of nature’s fury.
