The northbound span of the Interstate 5 Bridge will close to all traffic from 1 to 3 a.m. Saturday due to preliminary work related to the upcoming trunnion replacement project in September, according to a press release from the Oregon Department of Transportation.
Northbound drivers should detour to Interstate 205 and cross on the Glenn Jackson Bridge. Cyclists and pedestrians should follow detour signs on Hayden Island to switch to the sidewalk on the southbound I-5 Bridge span.
Preparation work for the trunnion project also includes periodic one- and two-lane closures on both spans of the bridge. Closures began this week and are expected to continue through Saturday night.
The trunnion replacement project will close the northbound span to all traffic for nine days, Sept. 12-20. Northbound traffic will be rerouted to share the southbound span during the closure, but the reduced capacity is expected to cause significant congestion. Commuters are urged to work remotely or change their travel schedules during the project.
