The annual Veterans Day parade held at the Fort Vancouver National Site has been canceled this year to avoid spreading COVID-19, the Historic Trust announced Tuesday.

This November’s Lough Legacy Veterans Parade would have marked the event’s 34th year. The parade was founded in 1986 by a group of volunteers to honor the community’s veterans, and has since grown to encompass more than 100 parade entries and 5,000 annual visitors.

In a media release, Historic Trust CEO David Pearson said it was “a very sad and difficult decision to cancel” one of the largest veteran parades on the West Coast recognized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

“We know this is an important and meaningful tradition in the Portland/Vancouver area,” Pearson said. “We hope to see all of you next year and celebrate bigger and better than ever.”

Other major community events have also been casualties of the COVID-19 pandemic this year. The Fourth of July fireworks show at Fort Vancouver was canceled for just the second time in the event’s 57-year history. Caution toward coronavirus also canceled the Clark County Fair for the first time since World War II.
