A Vancouver boy was among the winners at one of the largest youth wrestling tournaments in the nation last weekend.

Jon Schoenlein won the 145-pound weight class in the 12-under division at the Reno Worlds in Tulsa tournament on Sunday.

The folkstyle tournament usually draws thousands of wrestlers to Reno every summer. But due to COVID-19 restrictions in Nevada, this year’s event was moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Wrestlers went through rigorous safety protocols, including being tested for the virus. Mats were spread out with extra distance in the Titans Sports Complex, a large indoor venue that can hold six basketball courts.

Schoenlein, 12, won four matches over two days to win his weight class, which had 14 wrestlers in it. That earned him All-American honors, which went to the top three wrestlers in each class.

The Thomas Jefferson Middle School student has a long resume of wrestling honors. In 2018, he was named to the USA Wrestling Kids National Team and won dual All-American honors at the USA Wrestling Kids Freestyle and Greco-Roman Nationals in Atlanta.

August tennis summer camps scheduled

The Vancouver Tennis Center and Evergreen Tennis are both offering youth summer camps through the end of August.

Camp sizes are limited to maintain social distancing and safety.

“We’ve been diligently following our safety and cleaning protocols and doing everything we can to try to ensure that our staff and clients stay safe and healthy,” said Nikki Nadig, registration coordinator at VTC.

Age groups for the VTC camps are 8-10, 11-13, and high school. In the 8-13 age range, players will be divided up based on skill levels. The remaining week-long camps are Aug. 10-14, Aug. 17-21 and Aug. 24-28.

The five-day youth camps are $130 (members), $156 (non-members); high schools camps are $150 and $180.
