Man arrested following police chase, attempted carjacking in Vancouver

Vancouver police say a 32-year-old man was arrested Saturday after ramming a patrol vehicle and trying to carjack a motorist during a police pursuit in west Vancouver.

Bicycle unit officers were patrolling the parking lot of Frenchman’s Bar Regional Park at 8601 N.W. Erwin O. Rieger Memorial Highway when they spotted a black Honda Accord with stolen license plates, Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp said in an email.

The car was occupied by a man, later identified by police as Joshua Derrick, who was passed out in the driver’s seat. Additional officers responded to help with contacting Derrick; one of them set up “stop sticks” under the Honda’s front tires and blocked the stolen vehicle with a patrol car, police said.

“While waiting for another unit, Joshua Derrick woke up and started the vehicle. Verbal commands were given to Mr. Derrick, but he refused to comply. Instead, he placed the vehicle into gear and began to ram the patrol officers’ vehicle several times,” Kapp wrote.

The police vehicle was pushed back and nearly hit two bicycle officers, police said.

Derrick broke through the containment, running into a civilian’s vehicle in the process. The stop sticks had punctured the Honda’s front tires, which began to rip apart during a subsequent police chase that ended on West Mill Plain Boulevard near Franklin Street, where Derrick drove into a curb, police said.

A firearm was located inside the stolen car, Kapp said.

Derrick fled on foot, heading south on Daniels Street. He allegedly attempted to carjack a parked motorist, police said.

A Clark County Sheriff’s Office canine was deployed to help take Derrick into custody, according to the police department. Derrick was booked into the Clark County Jail on suspicion of assault, possession of a stolen vehicle, second-degree robbery, attempting to elude police and hit-and-run on an unattended vehicle, the jail’s inmate roster shows.
