A man was arrested Friday afternoon after he allegedly stabbed a stranger in the face and neck in a store parking lot in east Vancouver. The victim, who was not identified, was seriously injured.

Vancouver police officers and medics were called at 1:13 p.m. to the Wilco farm store, 1901 N.E. 162nd Ave., for a disturbance involving a weapon in the parking lot. Drivers were advised to avoid the area.

Several bystanders detained the suspect and tended to the victim before police arrived, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

The victim, a 55-year-old man, was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, police said.

“The quick intervention of the citizens who witnessed the assault clearly saved the victim’s life,” the police department said in a news release.

Police said the assault appears to have been random; the men didn’t know each other.

Detectives interviewed the suspect, identified as Nathan A. Karch, 33, of Vancouver, and subsequently arrested him on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder. He will be booked into the Clark County Jail.

Police have not said what precipitated the stabbing.
