Seven community gardens within the city of Vancouver will open to the public sooner than initially planned, an attempt to ensure more residents have access to fresh fruits and vegetables during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The gardens will open back up on May 4, instead of on July 31 as originally announced. The affected gardens are:

• Marshall Community Park Garden, 1009 E McLoughlin Blvd.

• LeRoy Haagen Community Park Garden, Northeast Campus Drive at 65th Avenue.

• Ellsworth Road Garden, Southeast 10th Street at Ellsworth Road.

• Fruit Valley Park Garden, West 31st Street at Fruit Valley Road.

• Bella Vista Park Garden, Bella Vista Road at 20th Way.

• First Place Park Garden, Northeast 16th Street at 151st Avenue.

Vancouver City Manager Eric Holmes announced the changed date in an emergency order issued Wednesday afternoon.

The city council will review the change at its next regular meeting on May 4.
