A fire destroyed a camper trailer and shop north of Washougal on Wednesday morning.

East County Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched at 2:13 a.m. to 31700 N.E. George Road for the report of a structure fire.

The first engine arrived at the property in about 14 minutes. Its crew found a 30-foot camper trailer and an approximately 20-by-40 foot shop or outbuilding in flames, said ECFR Chief Mike Carnes.

The fire appeared to have started in the camper trailer and spread to the shop. Crews doused the fire from the exterior of the building and mainly aimed their hoses on flames reaching up to surrounding tree foliage, Carnes said.

“We were concerned about it starting a fire in the woods so that’s where we focused,” the chief said.

The fire was under control in about 10 minutes, but crews stayed on scene for several hours to make sure it was completely out.

The shop had belongings inside, possibly a car or motorcycle. The building and its contents were a complete loss, Carnes said.

Camas-Washougal Fire responded with two engines to help out East County’s two tenders and one fire engine.

The cause is being investigated by the Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office.
