Weather Eye: Burst of spring makes staying home enjoyable

I can’t say enough about this fine spring weather other than I am enjoying it even while having to hang around home. I must admit the sunny skies make everything just a tad bit easier, don’t you think?

It was chilly over the weekend with the overnight low temperatures. Mostly in the 30s in the central Vancouver area, but down in the 20s in the colder outlying locations, including Yacolt and the lower foothills. Vancouver recorded a low of 34 degrees with scattered frost.

The exception was the upper foothills, where east winds were blowing and temperatures were in the 40s. Yeah, an inversion, to say the least. The Canadian air mass over us this past weekend brought very low dew points down into the teens, which is lower than on most summer days. This meant really dry air.

Coupled with brisk winds, several brushfires and a bark-dust fire in the Longview area brought heavy smoke to Clark County on Sunday afternoon. With the lack of rainfall, a dry air mass and stiff winds all result in high fire danger, and it’s only April. We talked about that the other day.

Later today we will see the beginning of an onshore flow of air as a weak weather disturbance slides down from Canada on Wednesday. This will raise the humidity and bring morning clouds — perhaps some drizzle but clearing later in the day on Wednesday.

Then high pressure rebounds and it’s back into the 70s with easterly winds Thursday and Friday. The weekend looks like it would be the first chance of any rain, but we may end up with only some cloudiness. We’ll look at that on Thursday.

Meanwhile thanks to our cold overnight temperatures we are still running about a half of a degree below average so far this month.

Rainfall is over an inch below average, and this is the driest start to April in about 16 years or so.

Enjoy your week and we’ll chat on Thursday.
