Clark County law enforcement will receive hundreds of thousands of dollars for personal protective equipment thanks to the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act.

The relief package was passed by Congress and signed into law last week, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash.

Washington will receive more than $16.6 million through the legislation, which will help state and local law enforcement agencies respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. The city of Vancouver will receive $206,582 while Clark County will get $103,135, according to the news release.

A total of 45 cities and counties statewide are eligible to receive funding to be used for the purchase of protective equipment and other critical medical items, as well as training, hiring and addressing the medical needs of inmates.

Washington will also receive $2.9 billion for hospitals and medical facilities, $2.95 billion for state and local governments and $52 million in housing grants, Cantwell said.

Localities have until May 29 to submit grant applications to the U.S. Department of Justice.
