Grocery workers union sees big impact from boycott

Fred Meyer and QFC owner Kroger reached a tentative contract agreement over the weekend with United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555, the union that represents grocery workers in Oregon and Southwest Washington.

The agreement came a few days after union leaders called for a boycott of Portland-area Fred Meyer stores. Union spokeswoman Kelley McAllister said workers saw sales drop by an average of about 30 percent across several Portland-area locations, with a much-steeper drop for some departments.

McAllister stressed that the estimate was purely anecdotal, based on sales numbers that union workers reported seeing at some of the stores. Still, she said, the compromise’s timing suggested that the boycott made a difference.

“Our communities really showed up for us,” she said. “It appeared to our members that the boycott had a huge impact.”

McAllister also credited a federal mediator for helping reach a deal. The most recent bargaining session was the first to include a mediator, she said.

A representative for Fred Meyer did not immediately return requests for comment.
