The cold air mass could be felt Friday evening as brisk northwest winds ushered through the county. Although rainfall amounts were on the light side, things got exciting Saturday between 3 and 6 p.m.
A squall line rotated around the center of cold low pressure to our east and caused an uproar. Lightning and thunder rolled through many neighborhoods from east to west with some downpours. Spotty hail covered some roads several inches thick. Plus, electrical power was knocked out during the storms.
Wow, what a way for autumn to get started. Early Saturday, snow began to pile up at Timberline and even a few inches at Government Camp, covering the passes in slushy snowfall. Meanwhile along the coast, it was mostly clear and sunny all day, no rain.
We lose much of the precipitation threat as the cold upper-level low meanders eastward, although scattered showers are still possible today. The coldest outlying areas with that clearing will have frost overnight and again Monday night. I think you are safe in much of the metro area, but lows will still be in the upper 30s if winds remain light.
