Volunteers pitch in on building improvements for winter shelter

Esther Short — Eighty-two volunteers — including families from La Center and Felida, members of St. Paul’s and St. Andrew’s Lutheran churches, and about 30 missionaries and other volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — spent a Saturday last month at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church working on improvements to buildings that house the Winter Hospitality Overflow organization’s winter shelter. The volunteers scraped loose paint, put primer on the resulting bare wood of the exterior walls and painted some fences. Plans for September include painting the exterior and replacing the roof. Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle visited the volunteers and brought lunch.
