After two years of back-to-back winners, the 59th Hudson’s Bay Steve Maas Run-A-Ree cross country season opener had some new names hit the tape first on Friday.

Hockinson junior Allyson Peterson won the 5,000-meter girls race with a time of 19 minutes, 8 seconds.

It was a solid Clark County affair in the girls race with nine of the top 10 individuals from the area.

The boys race was won by Abdinasir Hussein, a senior at Roosevelt in Portland. His time was 16:25 over 5,000 meters as seven of the top 10 runners were from outside Clark County.

David Carrion, a senior at Seton Catholic, topped the local runners by placing third in 16:50.

The Union girls repeated as team champion with 51 points to beat out Skyview (65) and Seton Catholic (102).

Emily Thompson, a junior, was the top finisher for Union. She placed 10th in 21:47. Skyview sophomore Samantha Williams was second overall in 19:35.

Central Catholic of Portland won the boys team title with 45 points, followed by Barlow of Gresham, Ore. (99), and Skyview (106).

The Run-A-Ree is named for 1969 Hudson’s Bay grad/runner Steve Maas, a decorated Vietnam War pilot who died in a helicopter crash during military training exercises at Fort Hood, Texas, in 1973.
