Riley McCarthy missed the thrill of football.

The Mountain View junior is back after stepping away last season to focus on baseball.

Now that he has his first win as Mountain View’s quarterback – Friday’s 47-0 drubbing of Juanita at McKenzie Stadium – McCarthy couldn’t be happier.

“I missed it from the get-go,” McCarthy said. “Seeing the boys run out on Friday nights from the student section was just different. It hurt a little bit.”

McCarthy threw for 230 yards and four touchdown passes Friday. He also rushed for 95 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown scamper.

After two early interceptions, McCarthy finished strong, completing 11 of his last 15 passes.

“I dropped my head a little bit more than I would like to,” McCarthy said. “Obviously, you’re upset in the moment. But it’s a testament to our guys and our leaders. They picked me up. … Our whole team is full of positivity. They weren’t going to let me get down.”

McCarthy’s teammates had his back, including his defense. The Thunder (1-1) allowed just 107 yards to Juanita (0-2). VA Ili led the way with four sacks.

“Every week at practice, our coach is always preaching to set the tone,” said Ili. “Our defense always makes sure to set the tone for our offense.”

Key Moments

* Mountain View ended the first half with momentum, thanks to Jude Mullette. The kicker nailed a 40-yard field goal that would have been good from 50. It gave the Thunder a 17-0 lead and capped a scoring drive that covered 45 yards in 46 seconds.

* With 9:00 left in the second quarter, Juanita quarterback Connor Blackburn hit Eli Eubanks for a 61-yard completion. Though it didn’t lead to any points, it was Juanita’s first first down of the game. Mountain View’s defense dominated, allowing just two first downs the entire half and 107 yards for the game.

* Mountain View put the game to rest early in the third quarter. Isaiah Johnson’s 18-yard touchdown catch gave the Thunder a 24-0 lead. It came two plays after Johnson caught a 32-yard pass to put Mountain View in scoring position.

Key Players

Davis Delmage: The junior was McCarthy’s most consistent receiving target. He caught five passes for 80 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown to give the Thunder a 14-0 lead.

VA Ili: The defensive tackle was central to Mountain View’s defensive dominance. He had four sacks, the first of which snuffed out Juanita’s best scoring chance, knocking the Rebels out of field goal range.

Quotable

“Our coach always tells us to outhit, outhustle and be mentally tougher than our opponent. That’s exactly what we did,” — VA Ili, Mountain View senior defensive lineman.
