Clark Athletic Report: NWAC play opens for Penguins

The Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) schedule opens Wednesday for the Clark College men’s and women’s soccer teams and volleyball team.

Here’s a quick rundown:

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Record: 0-3 (Two losses at Friendlies Tournament in Seattle, one loss at Western Oregon Univ.)

This week: The defending NWAC South Region champion and NWAC runner-up Penguins begin league play against Chemeketa at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Harmony Sports Complex in east Vancouver. The Penguins then travel to Eugene on Saturday to play Lane.

Notable: Of the 27 players on the Penguins’ roster, 18 are from Clark County and 10 are returning from last season.

MEN’S SOCCER

Record: 2-0 (both wins at Friendlies Tournament in August at Starfire Complex)

This week: The NWAC South Region play begins with a home match vs. Chemeketa at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Kim Christiansen Field on the Clark campus in Vancouver. Chemeketa was playoff team last season.

Notable: Of the 25 players on the Penguins’ roster, 18 are from Clark County.

VOLLEYBALL

Record: 6-6

This week: The NWAC South Region play begins at Gresham as the Penguins take on Mt. Hood at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Clark, a playoff team last season, opens at home at 4 p.m. Friday against Blue Mountain at the O’Connell Sports Center on the Clark campus. Clark then heads to Centralia for a crossover tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

CROSS COUNTRY

Coming up: The Penguins will be at the NWAC Preview on Sept. 28 at Lacey.

Season opener: Sophomore Micah Goff (Union HS) was 47th overall out of 107 runners for the Penguins at the Ash Creek Festival in Monmouth, Ore., last week, completing the 6K course in 20:25.6. Paige Neff (Camas HS) led the Clark women by placing 58th overall out of 110 runners with a time of 17:27.5 on the 4K course.
