Sure, the Union Titans lost a bevy of star power from last season’s undefeated team that won the school’s first football state championship.

But, in Friday’s season opener at McKenzie Stadium, the Titans wasted little time showing they’re still a mighty force.

Senior tailback Isaiah Jones rushed for 205 yards on 27 carries and scored all three Union touchdowns as the defense shutout Mountain View in the second half for a 20-10 victory.

Union (1-0) has now won 15 straight games after going 14-0 in 2018 that ended with a 52-20 victory over Lake Stevens in the 4A state title game. The Titans also have won four straight against their in-district rival.

Debuting new flashy red uniforms and replacing 14 all-league graduated seniors, the Titans powered their way to 280 first-half yards and held a 47-18 advantage on plays over Mountain View (0-1) holding a 14-10 halftime advantage. The first half featured four lead changes; the Thunder scored on their opening drive with Jude Mullette’s 39-yard field goal.

Jones’ touchdown runs came on 69, 15 and 4 yards. His 15-yard run with 3 minutes, 12 seconds left in the third quarter pushed Union to its largest lead.

Key moments

Fourth down? No problem: The Titans converted four fourth downs, and one came on their first touchdown drive. Facing fourth-and-7 at the 17, quarterback CJ Jordan found sophomore Tobias Merriweather for a 14-yard reception that led to a Jones’ rushing touchdown. That gave Union a 7-3 second-quarter lead, the second of four lead changes in the game.

Second-half shutout: Only once did Mountain View get inside the red zone. That came on a four-play, 86-yard second-quarter drive that ended with Riley McCarthy’s 4-yard touchdown run. A key play in that drive was the game’s longest play — McCarthy’s 76-yard pass to Alec Cann that set up McCarthy’s run two plays later. After that, Union’s defense forced Mountain View to punt three times and also forced a turnover with a Daron Ulrich interception.

Key players

Isaiah Jones, Union: Of Union’s 48 rushes, 28 went to Jones. The tailback’s largest touchdown run — 69 yards — came on the first play from scrimmage.

Riley McCarthy, Mountain View: In his varsity quarterback debut, the junior went 10 of 20 passing and also rushed 12 times for 28 yards. McCarthy, a University of Portland baseball commit, returned to football after not playing sophomore year. He played in 2017 as a freshman.

Quotable

“That’s a great first game for us — a great test for us.” — Union head coach Rory Rosenbach.
