Weather Eye: Trick-or-treaters will enjoy a dry night, but would be wise to wear warm costumes

Treat-or-treating tonight will be dry — that’s good. After dark, temperatures drop quickly into the 40s and will reach upper 30s later at night. Dress warm.

Our dry weather continues for another week or so. There are signs that the massive ridge of high pressure will flatten and allow weak weather disturbances to drop down in a northwesterly flow and bring more clouds and increasing chance of light showers. That would be early to midweek next week. Right now, most of any light rain would be north of Clark County, but we insert the chance of showers in the extended forecast as always.

There is a remote possibility we’ll get cold east winds again next week. A weak shot of cool air filters in today and Friday, keeping the Gorge winds alive. Frosty conditions are still expected at night but slowly moderating as the days go on.

Vancouver dipped to 24 degrees early Wednesday morning, close to the record low of 22 degrees in 1991. There was a report of upper teens near Moulton Falls. Brrr — that’s cold for October.

We only managed a high temperature Tuesday of 47 degrees, which is a good 10 degrees below normal. It was March 12 when we had our last previous high in the 40s.

Our average mean temperature for the month is 50 degrees, nearly 4 degrees below average. We didn’t do well in the rainfall department either, with over an inch below average. The October total for Vancouver is 1.99 inches.

Do you remember that nice sunny warm day on Oct. 6 with a high of 70 degrees? After the recent chilly weather, it has almost fallen from my memory banks. I really enjoy the clear and sunny weather, but as I have said before, we need the winter rain and snow machine to kick into high gear as we enter November.
