AARP Foundation Tax-Aide has kicked off volunteer recruitment for the 2020 tax season. Help is needed in a variety of volunteer roles including tax preparers, client relations, technical and management experts and interpreters. Every level of experience is welcome, and training is provided.

Area Agency on Aging and Disabilities of Southwest Washington needs a long-term care ombudsman to advocate for the rights of residents in long-term care facilities, providing an effective means for resolution of concerns about the quality of life in those facilities. A four-day, 32-hour certification training is provided. Training dates this fall will be held on Oct. 30 and 31, and Nov. 1 and 5.

Clark County Inter-Service Walk and Knock the nation’s largest one-day community food drive will need volunteers leading up to the food drive on Nov. 23 to help with bag folding and Nov. 30 for bag distribution. On Dec. 7, the day of the food drive, volunteers will be needed for a variety of assignments.

Meals on Wheels People seeks drivers and substitute drivers to deliver hot, nutritious meals to homebound seniors. Driving, walking and bike routes are available. Shifts run 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Historic Trust needs docents and tour guides to greet guests, answer phones, help with mailings and donations, and give tours at the Howard House, Marshall House, Pearson Air Field, and Providence Academy. One four-hour volunteer shift each week is preferred.

Other opportunities

Furry Friends and Barnes & Noble seeks volunteers to giftwrap purchases in exchange for a small donation from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 30. Shifts are two hours long, two people per shift. To help, contact Julie Goldbeck, information@furryfriendswa.org.

The Cape Horn Conservancy is looking for volunteers to pitch in to rake the leaves and debris from the entire Cape Horn Trail from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 17. Bring your own rake; hard hats and garden gloves can also be useful. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring water and a snack. Join volunteers at the Washougal Firehouse for snacks afterward. Clark County and city of Vancouver volunteer programs seeks participants for The Butt Stops Here, an annual cleanup of cigarette butts and other litter from local parts in conjunction with Make a Difference Day. The cleanup starts at 9 a.m. today, and groups will reconvene at noon to weigh their bags of cigarette butts. Volunteers can also enjoy warm beverages provided by Dutch Bros, and a coupon for pizza from Blind Onion. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Bring your own gloves if you can.
