ESTHER SHORT — Nearly 1,500 women from 13 states and two countries recently participated in WHY Racing Events’ Girlfriends Run for a Cure on Oct. 13. The event started and ended at WareHouse ’23, with women running along the Columbia River, near Fort Vancouver and Officers Row. In its 13th year, it has passed $600,000 raised, according to a news release. The event was started by WHY Racing Events owner Sherri McMillan, who wanted to honor her friend Joleen Skarberg, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. “Joleen continues to do the event every year wearing No. 1 Girlfriends Bib and is a testimony to the power of funds raised so there is better diagnosis and treatment for women undergoing breast cancer — so like Joleen, they can come back stronger than ever and live healthy, vibrant lives” McMillan said. The event also honored the company’s former marketing director, Jaime Wyatt Miller, who died from cancer. The Jaime Wyatt Miller Cancer Compassion Fund was started to provide support for women with breast cancer. See the full list of winners at whyracingevents.com.
