Weather Eye: Don’t let frost on pumpkin surprise you

Wasn’t Sunday a picture-perfect autumn day with clear blue skies and warm temperatures? It can’t get better than that. Looking at the Cascades you could see a fresh mantle of white on the mountain peaks. And, I know many of you made the trip to local pumpkin patches and the kids had a blast. No muddy shoes.

OK, hold that thought for a moment as we come back to reality. A cold air mass is over us today for a chance of showers and a little snow in the mountains right down to pass levels. The good news is it will move out of here quickly and we will have high pressure dominate our weather the rest of the week. This time, however, cold air will be blowing in on easterly winds and highs certainly won’t be in the 70s. I’m thinking closer to 60 degrees, maybe a few more degrees. Overnight, many of us in calm areas will have another frost, so frost on the pumpkin is the weather headline this week.

Again, as our cool shot of weather last week, if this were a couple of months from now, we would be in a deep freeze with modified arctic air. Boy, is this pattern setting up early and will it continue into winter? If it does, we will have a feisty winter. Dig out the gloves.

I see no sign of the official start of the autumn rains with progressive storms traipsing across the Pacific our way. We’ll enjoy some fine autumn weather for a while, albeit cool and crisp, just the way we like it. It will make the autumn leaves colorful this year, peaking in the next two weeks.

The coldest shot of air will be in Eastern Washington and Oregon, where the high plateaus will drop well into the teens and 20s. Single digits? Perhaps.

Meanwhile, get through today and then enjoy the sunny weather the rest of the week. Protect cold, sensitive plants.
