COWLITZ INDIAN RESERVATION — Tim Conklin, the chef at the ilani Resort’s Line & Lure restaurant, won the Golden Ladle Award on Sunday as more than 800 people gathered at a fundraiser for Share, the local nonprofit that provides assistance to Clark County’s homeless and hungry.

The annual Soup’s On fundraiser provides money for Share’s programs, which include homeless shelters, meal services, and a backpack program that gives schoolchildren food to take home to their families on the weekends, when school meals are unavailable.

Cooking at his own establishment, Conklin’s Smoked Steelhead Chowder won the People’s Choice Award in a 12-chef cookoff to determine the best soup. The Chef’s Choice Award went to Brandon Carman, the chef at Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center, who prepared a Green Chile Chicken Enchilada soup. Marian Adams-Manuel of Frontier Public House received the Presenting Sponsor Award for her Curried Pumpkin Bisque.

Marc Veneroso was named the 2019 Emily Marshall Volunteer of the Year. A retired bridge engineer, he has volunteered at Share House, the downtown men’s shelter, for five years, helping in the kitchen, sorting donations and doing whatever else is needed.

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church was honored as Share’s 2019 Community Partner. Parishioners bring dinner to the Share Homestead family shelter in east Vancouver on Mondays, serve it and clean up afterward. They also provide gifts to the residents.

As part of the annual event, attendees got to take home a hand-crafted soup bowl. This year’s potters were Pat Brame, Christopher Brodigan, Nick Molatore and Honna Sheffield.

Jessica Lightheart, Share’s community relations director, said 841 guests and 90 volunteers attended the event, which was held in ilani’s largest ballroom. The amount of money pledged hasn’t been totaled yet, but Lightheart said Share anticipates the total will surpass last year.

Share’s next large fundraiser, its annual gala, is set for April 25 at the Hilton Vancouver Washington.
