Weather Eye: Nice weekend ahead, but things will get cooler, wetter on Tuesday

The forecast is fairly easy today as we expect some showers and a chance of thunderstorms through tonight and Friday. The weekend looks nice, with highs in the 60s. Picture perfect for almost any outdoor fall events.

I expect fair weather to hold on Monday, as well, but another cooler and showery period by Tuesday. And a little more snow in the mountains.

Looking back to the cold weather last weekend, Spokane had 1.9 inches of snow on Sept. 28; the previous record was 1.4 inches in 1926. The 1.9 inches is the most in September since records began in 1881.

Of course, many locations around the Northwest broke low-temperature records for the daily highs, including Vancouver. While Vancouver had a low of 34 degrees Tuesday, many locations out in the county, such as Battle Ground and Yacolt, slipped below freezing in the 20s, with lots of frost. Did I say frost on the pumpkin? In October we transition rather quickly, with lowering high temperatures. Our average high on Oct. 1 is 70 degrees and by Halloween the average is 57 degrees.

September rainfall in Vancouver was 4.06 inches, some 2.5 inches above average. Did you know in September of 2012 we only had .04 of an inch while Olympia and Bellingham received no measurable precipitation? And folks, that’s how we determine the average, using the collection of extremes averaged out over a 25-year period.

OK, woolly bear consensus is almost in. The majority I have seen and reports from many of you indicate a cold winter.
