The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on Wednesday announced it was awarding $131.3 million to 325 public housing authorities across the country to provide housing for people with disabilities. This included about $8.7 million for Washington, with $1,005,288 awarded to Vancouver Housing Authority.
With the award, the local housing authority will provide 100 housing vouchers to offset the cost of renting an apartment, HUD said. This housing assistance is provided through HUD’s Mainstream Housing Choice Vouchers program, which assists non-elderly people with disabilities.
“Mainstream vouchers are a critical tool in reducing the risk that people with disabilities might be institutionalized or experience homelessness and enable them to live independently in the communities they choose to call home,” HUD Northwest Regional Administrator Jeff McMorris said in a news release.
Housing Opportunities of SW Washington in Longview received a $403,870 award to provide 60 housing vouchers.
