Clark men’s basketball starts season 2-1

Penguins open at Umpqua Invitational

The Clark College men’s basketball team opened its season at the Umpqua Invitational in Roseburg, Ore., playing three games in three days. The Penguins went 2-1. Here’s a recap of those games.

SUNDAY: GREEN RIVER 83, CLARK 80 — The Penguins couldn’t catch up to the Gators in the final 4½ minutes and dropped their final game at the season-opening tournament.

Sophomore Matt Garrison, a King’s Way Christian grad, had a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

Freshman Colton Gorski led Clark (2-1) in scoring with 20 points. Freshmen Zach Rivers added 14 points and Dylan Hushaw had 11.

Clark recovered from an early 35-20 deficit to only be down by two at halftime, 45-43.

Green River led by as much as nine in the second half, however Clark hung around and kept the score a one-possession game for the final 2:35.

SATURDAY: CLARK 74, BLUE MOUNTAIN 71 — Freshman Bradley Bickler scored 16 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists as the Penguins held on to beat Blue Mountain.

Dylan Hushaw added 15 points and Matt Garrison had 13 points and six rebounds for Clark.

The Penguins took the lead for good with 4:51 to play, but Blue Mountain got within two points twice.

Clark closes out the season-opening tournament today against Green River.

FRIDAY: CLARK 93, SIMPSON UNIVERSITY JV 43 — Dylan Hushaw and Union High grad Ethan Smith each scored 17 points as the Penguins beat the junior varsity squad from Redding, Calif., in their season opener.

Matt Garrison added 16 points, Zach Brown had 15 points, Kevin Robello had 10 points, and Liam Clark had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

NEXT UP

The Penguins open at home at 4 p.m. Saturday against Columbia Basin.
