Community Leadership Awards presented

The Washington Association of School Administrators presents Community Leadership Awards to community members or groups to recognize their outstanding contributions to education.

The 2019 WASA recipients (and their local school district) are:

Dr. Alan Melnick and the team from Clark County Public Health, Vancouver Public Schools.

Di Childers, Lyle School District.

Georgianna Jones and Scott Rose, Ridgefield School District.

Longview Rotary Literacy Committee, Longview School District.

Mavis Nickels and Ken Root, Battle Ground Public Schools.

Three Squares Program, Stevenson-Carson School District.

Travis Gray, Centerville School District.

Veronica Copeland, Heather Fresh and Rocky Fresh, Camas School District.

Washington Green Schools and Bill Marcum, Educational Service District 112.

Golden Gavel Award: Gene Sharratt for the contributions made to public education over his 47-year career. This award marks an outstanding contribution to public education in the state of Washington.

Student Achievement Leadership Award: Bill Oman, director of secondary schools for Evergreen Public Schools, for his leadership in drastically increasing the district’s graduation rate. This award recognizes innovative programs for the improvement of student achievement.

Award of Merit: Doug Dearden, superintendent of Trout Lake Schools, for his dedicated leadership in pushing for equal educational opportunities and adequate funding for small schools. This award recognizes outstanding longtime educational leadership.

Students win at BGPS 60th art show

Battle Ground Public Schools students who had the opportunity to participate in the 60th Annual District Art Show earlier this month were given awards. There were more than 800 pieces of art created by students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Former district art teachers selected winning pieces from each grade level.
