Weather Eye: May weather returns to normal with clouds, rain on horizon

We are back to normal May weather today with clouds and rain or showers for the next seven to 10 days. High temperatures will hover within a few degrees of the average high of 68.

It is difficult to pinpoint the arrival and strength of incoming weather systems as much of the energy will slide down the coast into California.

Some forecast models indicate a cold low will move out of the Bering Sea and park itself off our coastline this weekend. That means snow will fall down to Timberline and maybe down to 5,000 feet. That translates to chilly weather for us.

This cool and damp period will ease wildfire danger. Keep an eye on the daily rainfall amounts as your lawn needs an inch of water each week if you want it green. Plants and shrubs next to your house and under dense trees will still need watering.

I’m thinking we’ll get a quarter to half an inch by Saturday and another half inch into early next week. This doesn’t mean it will be a total washout as we keep a chance of rain or showers each day. As mentioned above, the uncertainty on the track and intensity of the weather systems also means we can have some sunny or partly sunny periods. Maybe we go one day with no measurable rain.

It was extremely unusual to go three weeks with hardly any rain here locally and unusual for California to have moderate rain in their forecast for mid-May. There may be dark skies this Saturday for the parade in Hazel Dell. I hope not.

Enjoy your week and we will chat on Thursday.
