The Mountain View boys soccer team traveled out of state to advance in the 3A state tournament.
The Thunder beat Hermiston (Ore.) on the road Tuesday, triumphing 2-1 by winning a shootout 3-2.
Mountain View (14-5-1) advances to the 3A quarterfinals and will host Kamiakin either Friday or Saturday.
Mountain View goalkeeper Cole Taylor had four saves in the shootout after saving five shots in regulation and overtime.
“It came down to who wanted it more,” Mountain View coach Dustin Johnson said. “Our goalkeeper came up huge.”
Christopher Grozav scored in the 48th minute to give Mountain View a 1-0 lead.
Hermiston, an Oregon school that joined the WIAA prior to the 2018-19 academic year, tied the match in the 66th minute.
After regulation ended 1-1, neither team scored in a 10-minute overtime.
In the shootout, Grozav, Elijah Thompson, Justin Lufkin-Quant converted their kicks for Mountain View.
Softball
Camas wins play-in game — Mary Pipkin threw a five-inning perfect game as Camas beat Kentridge 10-0 in a 4A bi-district play-in game at Lacey.
Pipkin, who struck out seven, also went 2 for 3 at the plate. Amelia Wong and Marleigh Foster also went 2 for 3 for Camas (13-8).
The Papermakers, who finished third in the 4A Greater St. Helens League, advance to the 16-team bi-district tournament this weekend in Kent.
Camas opens against Puyallup at 11 a.m. on Friday. League champ Battle Ground and Skyview also reached the bi-district tournament.
Girls Golf
Camas wins 4A bi-district title — The Papermakers weathered the conditions at Gold Mountain in Bremerton to beat out second-place Olympia 673-682 to send the team to state.
Emma Cox and Ashley Clark tied for 12th each with a 159 total. Wenny Cai was 24th (166), Elizabeth Gillespie was 38th (182) and Ashley Gillespie was 39th (184).
Also qualifying for state was Skyview’s Maddy Starwalt, who placed 18th with a 166.
The 4A state tournament is May 21-22 at Hangman Valley Golf Course in Spokane.
Mountain View qualifies at 3A — Mountain View placed fourth at the 3A bi-district championships in Port Orchard to qualify for the 3A state championships.
Audrey Chang led the Thunder, placing 14th with a two-day total of 187. Calley West and Maria Martos finished tied for 21st with 197.
Fort Vancouver qualified both of its bi-district entrants to state. Kiana Coburn placed sixth with 174. Hallie Tibbits was 19th with 194.
King’s Way qualifies three to state — King’s Way Christian had three players advance to the 1A/2B state tournament.
Riley Philbrook (sixth place), Aly Evanson (tie for eighth) and Hannah Moats (12th) advanced from the two-day district tournament, which concluded Tuesday at Tumwater Valley.
La Center’s Hannah Graham finished tied for eighth to advance to state, which will be May 21-22 at Tumwater Valley.
Boys Golf
Mountain View’s Moody wins 3A bi-district — Mountain View sophomore Graham Moody won the 3A bi-district tournament in Port Orchard.
Moody shot a two day total of 146 (74-72).

Huntington of Camas places second at bi-district — Owen Huntington of Camas shot a two-day total of 147 to place second at the 4A bi-district tournament in Bremerton.
Playing his first high school match since the district championships in October, Huntington followed a 1-under 71 Monday with a four-over 76. The sophomore finished six shots behind Drew Halili of South Kitsap.
Huntington and four other local golfers qualified for the state championships May 21-22 in Spokane. They are Anthony Tobias of Battle Ground (tied for 28th place), Anthony Chae of Skyview (tied for 32nd), Chase Williams of Union (40th) and Camden Mills of Union (tied for 42nd).
The top 16 individuals not on state-qualifying teams earned state berths.
Volleyball
Seton hires coach — Seton Catholic has named Kali Gesser — wife of former Washington State quarterback Jason Gesser — as its new head volleyball coach, athletic director Phil Kent announced Tuesday.
Kali Gesser previously coached at Pullman, leading the Greyhounds to back-to-back 2A state appearances in 2017 and ’18. As Kali Surplus, she played setter on two WSU volleyball teams in 2000 and ’01 that reached the NCAA tournament both years.
“I am thrilled to join the Seton Catholic family,” Gesser said in a press release. “As a coach, I seek out schools that pro vide all aspects of our youth’s development and create an environment that fosters growth through trusted relationships.”
Seton went 1-13 last fall under coach Kelly Adams.
