Happy Mother’s Day! We will enjoy yet another nice day today, except cooler with highs in the 70s and no rainfall. The long-anticipated change in the weather pattern began at the coast Sunday with highs 20 to 30 degrees cooler than Friday.
Marine air will begin its eastward progression today and Tuesday we have more cloudiness and cooler temperatures. Our first significant rain since April 19 will begin to fall Tuesday along the coast and inland Tuesday night or Wednesday. Amounts at first may not be all that much but I think we could have about a quarter to one-half inch of rain by the end of the week.
That sounds like a lot but the precipitation will be showery in nature so rainfall totals will vary around the county. The message here is that the last half of May will be cooler and wetter which is more typical. Our average mean temperature is running some five degrees above average so far this month.
The change will be good to temper fire danger, settle the dust and give thirsty trees and plants a drink. Hopefully it won’t drag on for an extended period of time and the sun reappears in time for the long Memorial Day weekend. We’ll look into the future further in Tuesday’s column.
