A man was arrested Sunday after a robbery at a Washougal convenience store.

Police were dispatched at 10:02 a.m. to E Street Market & Deli, 1414 E St., for a report of an armed robbery. A man with red hair wearing a red mask over his face told a store clerk he had a gun and demanded cash, Washougal Police Sgt. Perry Houts said.

Police searched the area roughly 20 minutes before spotting a man that matched the robber’s description, Houts said. Police arrested William T. Freeman, 29, of Washougal.

Freeman initially denied being involved but confessed to the robbery after numerous $10 bills were found in his pockets, which matched the description of the cash taken, Houts said. He then took police to a spot where he ditched a crowbar — rather than the reported gun — and some clothing he was previously wearing, Houts said.

Freeman was taken to the Clark County Jail on suspicion of first-degree robbery and third-degree theft.
