Clark County Fire District 3 is offering free smoke detectors to owners of single-family homes in its service area.
Residents can apply by filling out a form online at www.fire3.org.
A Federal Emergency Management Agency grant helps pay for the fire district’s free smoke detectors program.
Statistics show that families are 50 percent more likely to escape a house fire with a working smoke detector, the fire district said in a news release. However, many homes don’t have working smoke detectors.
“More than one-third (38 percent) of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present. And, three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms,” the news release says.
If approved, an applicant will receive an email or phone call to let them know their smoke detector can be picked up between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at Station 31, 17718 N.E. 159th St., in Brush Prairie. The fire district will install the device for elderly or disabled recipients.
