Letter: Abortion bill is mislabeled

By Geni Donaghey, Vancouver

Jaime Herrera Beutler supports a dangerous, extreme anti-abortion bill called the “Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.” It purports to “save the lives of babies that are born alive”; however, its true purpose is to smear pro-choice Democrats as supporting infanticide.

This bill would create potential criminal penalties relating to a medical choice made by families in later stages of pregnancy to induce labor when a fetus is unlikely to survive. Doctors who provide comfort care instead of attempting resuscitation could be jailed for up to five years. Congresswoman Herrera Beutler supports this extremist position and she does not represent Southwest Washington values.
