Prep highlights: La Center baseball outlasts Tenino to reach 1A district semis

A run-scoring single by Michael Goode in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Irving Alverez as the La Center baseball team beat Tenino 10-9 in the first round of the 1A district tournament on Monday at Castle Rock.

La Center (9-8) moves into a semifinal game against Montesano (18-2) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Hoquiam.

Tenino had tied the game a 9-9 in the top of the seventh on a string of singles to score two runs, but La Center got out of a bases-loaded jam thanks to an outfield catch by Tom Lambert for the third out.

La Center had to rally all game long. The Wildcats were down 4-0 after Tenino’s top of the first, then found themselves down 6-1 after Tenino’s third inning.

But La Center crawled back in it and eventually took a 9-7 lead going into the seventh where Tenino tied it up again.

HOQUIAM 10, KING’S WAY CHRISTIAN 4 — Ty Mairs was 2 for 4 with a double and a triple for King’s Way, but Hoquiam won the 1A district first-round game.

King’s Way (8-12) will face Forks (6-12) in a loser-out game Wednesday at Hoquiam.

COLUMBIA-WHITE SALMON 1, FORKS 0 — Garrett Hogberg, Davis Koester and Dominic Raether combined on a no-hitter for the Bruins in the 1A district first-round game.

The Bruins scored the only run of the game in the third inning.

Columbia (16-4) will play Hoquiam (13-6) in the semifinals on Wednesday at Castle Rock.

Boys soccer

SETON CATHOLIC 5, HOQUIAM 1 — David Moore scored two goals and had an assist, and Christian Martin had two goals as the Cougars won the first-round match of the 1A district tournament.

Seton (13-2) advances to face Forks (12-4) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Montesano in a winner-to-state match.

FORKS 3, LA CENTER 2 — The Wildcats slipped into the 1A district loser-out bracket with the loss at Forks. La Center (7-10) next will play Hoquiam (10-7) at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Tenino.

Girls golf

4A DISTRICT — Camas dominated the leaderboard on the first day at Tri-Mountain Golf Course.

Emma Cox was the leader in the clubhouse with a 4-over-par 76. Right behind her was teammate Ashley Clark with a 77. Wenny Cai was fourth at 89, and Ashley Gillespie was fifth at 92.

Sitting in third was Maddy Starwalt of Skyview ithe an 86.

3A DISTRICT — Liz Dolan of Kelso shot a 78 to lead the tournament, also at Tri-Mountain.

Kiana Coburn of Fort Vancouver was three shots back with a 79.

Mountain View teammates Andrey Chang and Kaila Bonawitz shared third place with 87s, and teammate Maria Martos was next with a 91.

Stars of the day

Mallory Meyer, Jennifer Westrand and Grace Stillman, Battle Ground softball. Meyer pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts in the 9-0 win over Heritage while Westrand was 4 for 4 with an RBI and Stillman hit a two-run home run and had four RBI.

Sophie Franklin, Camas softball, was 4 for 5 with two RBI in the Papermakers’ 13-3 win over 4A GSHL second-place Skyview.

Ashley Shelton, Prairie softball, knocked in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning as the Falcons beat 3A GSHL leader Mountain View 6-3 thanks to a three-run seventh inning.

Rebecca Cuypers, Kate Sagandorf and Dakota Piovesan, Evergreen softball. Each had three hits and combined for seven RBI and eight runs in a 21-3 win over Hudson’s Bay.

Kekai Schultz, Ridgefield softball, was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBI in a 9-0 win over Columbia River.

Kaily Christensen, Woodland softball, was 3 for 4 with two home runs and four runs scored in a 9-0 win over R.A. Long.
