Shoppers, say goodbye to sales tax exemption

Shoppers with Oregon ID will lose their Washington sales tax exemption as they’ve known it under a bill approved over the weekend in Olympia.

Starting in July, the sales tax exemption for Oregon residents and some others, such as British Columbia residents, will no longer be in effect, according to the provisions of the bill, which was passed as part of the two-year state budget.

One dead, one seriously injured in east Vancouver attempted homicide, suicide

A man shot and critically wounded his neighbor before committing suicide Sunday afternoon in east Vancouver.

Clark County Sheriff’s deputies responded around 12:35 p.m. to the 2800 block of Northeast 174th Avenue, according to a sheriff’s office news release. A man had walked across the street and shot the victim, who was mowing his lawn. He then shot and killed himself, deputies said.

Two dead in downed plane south of La Center

Two men were found dead in a downed airplane discovered Monday southeast of La Center.

A pilot flying over the area reported seeing the crash site at 4:11 p.m. in a marshy area south of the East Fork Lewis River at the dead end of Bjur Road off Northeast 269th Street, according to a news release from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Oregon man arrested in 25-year-old Vancouver homicide

Cutting-edge technology and old-fashioned detective work has led to the arrest of a 57-year-old Oregon man in connection with the rape and strangulation death of a a Vancouver woman 25 years ago.

Audrey Hoellein, 26, also known as Audrey Frasier, was found dead in her bed at the Family Tree Apartments on the 8000 block of East Fourth Plain Boulevard on July 17, 1994, according The Columbian archives. An autopsy concluded that she had been raped and strangled to death, according to court documents.

Legislature budget boosts education

Budget-strapped school districts in Clark County on Monday said they’d need more time to suss out how the Legislature’s late-adopted operating budget will affect their finances. But one thing seems certain: There will be a lot more money available for education.

And in the case of Vancouver and Evergreen public schools, it only took 13 lines of legislation to make it happen.
