A Vancouver man who allegedly intentionally rammed a Vancouver police corporal’s patrol vehicle, injuring him and disabling the vehicle, was in court Friday to be formally charged.

Robert Leroy Legg, 37, pleaded not guilty to second-degree assault, possession of a stolen vehicle and attempting to elude police in connection with the Jan. 21, 2018, incident. He was extradited to Clark County from Oregon on a warrant.

Legg has been serving a 22-month sentence in the Oregon State Penitentiary since March 2018, after he was convicted in Clackamas County of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, attempting to elude police and recklessly endangering another person, online records show.

At about 9:15 p.m., police were responding for a vehicle confirmed to have been stolen out of Oregon. The white Toyota Yaris turned into the Market Place Apartments, 2900 General Anderson Ave., where it was located by a Vancouver police corporal. Legg drove the Toyota at the patrol vehicle, striking it hard enough to injure the officer and disable his vehicle, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

The Yaris then sped off, with the suspect driving on the wrong side of the road and running red lights to elude pursuing police. The chase went across the Interstate 205 Bridge into Portland. Officers from Clackamas, Portland and West Linn, Ore., took over the pursuit. Legg was taken into custody after he crashed the vehicle, the affidavit says.

He is now being held at the Clark County Jail without bail. His trial is scheduled for June 14.
